 Boys Basketball Future #'s

This letter is to inform you of an upcoming public meeting to discuss whether or not our school should consider seeking an athletic co-op in the sport of boys basketball with Miller.  This meeting will be on Monday, February 1st at 7:00 in the school gym.

The primary reasons this is being looked at at this time are:

  • the projected future low numbers in boys basketball (see enclosed documents), and the reality that those numbers usually go down as students get older
  • the need to have the necessary paperwork in to the SDHSAA by their April meeting if we want, and Miller is willing, to do a co-op in boys basketball starting next year

There is no doubt that most schools don’t seek to co-op in sports until it is becoming a challenge to field their own teams.  As most of you know, we went into this year’s football season with what were low but believed doable numbers. Then we had an unexpected drop in those numbers right before the season started. We were fortunate to get a football co-op approved with Miller by the South Dakota High School Activities Association just before the season started. There is no guarantee another emergency coop would be approved by the SDHSAA.  I’m sure the football experience is also in the minds of some as we look at our future boys numbers. Therefore we want to at least have this discussion with our community as we move into what could be challenging numbers ahead in boys basketball.

We encourage everyone and anyone to be present at this community meeting to hear any more information and to share your opinions or ideas on this matter.  We are especially interested in the opinions of the current or future basketball players, and their parents.

The probable plan is for our board to make a decision at their February 8th board meeting as to whether or not to contact the Miller school district to consider a co-op in boys basketball for next year.  This community meeting, and any other communication being made with our school board members will play a major role in the decision that it made.  Again, we hope you have a chance to come to this meeting, and if not please reach out to me, the administration, or board members so they know your opinions on this to help guide them in their decision.
